Build a daily habit of deep work by scheduling it at the same time each day. Even 90 minutes every morning adds up to meaningful output over weeks and months. This is the most accessible approach for most people.
4. The Journalistic Philosophy
Fit deep work wherever you can, whenever you can. This requires mental discipline to switch modes quickly and works best for experienced practitioners.
Practical Steps to Start Doing Deep Work Today
- Choose your depth ritual. Decide where you'll work, for how long, and what rules you'll follow (phone away, specific browser tab blocked, etc.).
- Start small. Begin with 45–60 minute deep work blocks. Your concentration is a muscle — train it gradually.
- Embrace boredom. Resist the urge to pick up your phone at every quiet moment. The ability to tolerate boredom is essential to building focus.
- Quit social media during work hours. You don't have to quit entirely — just schedule intentional access windows rather than constant checking.
- Shut down deliberately. End your workday with a clear shutdown ritual. Incomplete tasks lingering in your mind fragment focus the next day.
